MEZVIDI PRIMARY SCHOOL

Mezvidi Primary School is situated in a small rural municipality called Mezvidi, Karsava region, in the east of Latvia, in one of the historically developed areas of Latvia called Latgale, about 300km away from the capital city Riga. Mezvidi municipality is a frontier village which has been included in Karsava region for 5 years. The school is situated in a geographically advantageous location. It is located in the centre of the village about 2,5km away from the highway Rezekne-Karsava. The local

bus traffic is well-developed so many people use this service to travel to the region centre Karsava or to Rezekne that is one of the largest cities of Latgale or to Ludza that is one of the oldest towns in Latvia. The railway crosses the village but the there is no passenger traffic. In the 19

th century there was an open field in the place where Mezvidi village is situated nowadays. The land belonged to the Russian landlord who lived in Ludza. The occupancy of the territory began with the construction of the railway. The first was built the railway station that was called Ivanovka. The first Jewish traders came to settle there later. Many buildings were built for living and as storehouses. Some of these buildings have survived

until today: the storehouse, the first floor of the old pub and the post horse

station that was later rebuilt and used as a railway station. The school premises are located in the former building of the old pub. The first floor is built of stones and has survived. Now there is a school canteen, kitchen, storerooms, gym, music room, home economics room for boys and a cloakroom for primary students on the first floor. The second storey is reconstructed and built of bricks. There are classrooms and teacher’s

room on the second floor. In the course of time the school has participated in different projects to raise funds in order to install the water pipes and WC, to rebuild lobby and loakrooms, to build the Green class and to change the floor in the gym. Our school is an institution operating under the authority of Ministry of Education. We have been providing primary education for the students from 6 to 15 years. The school has won
